Toen de bekende Franse filosoof René Descartes in 1628 naar Dordrecht reisde, was zijn doel de rector van de Latijnse School ter plaatse, Isaac Beeckman (1588-1637), die bekend was geworden als grondlegger van een nieuwe natuurfilosofie op mechanistische grondslag. Op dit tweedaags congres wordt de blik niet alleen op leven en werk van Beeckman gericht, maar ook op het wijdere culturele ambiance van de Merwestad.

Op 12 april 2023 vindt een symposium plaats aan de Vrije Universiteit ter gelegenheid van het 50-jarig bestaan van het Hoofdgebouw.

Op dit congres, op 25 november, belichten historici, journalisten, mediawetenschappers en anderen uiteenlopende aspecten van de geschiedenis van de universitaire pers sinds de late negentiende eeuw.

Op 10 november 2022 vindt een symposium plaats aan de Vrije Universiteit over leven en werk van de bioloog Jan Lever (1922-2010). Aanleiding is het feit dat het in 2022 een eeuw geleden is dat Lever werd geboren.

Martin J.S. Rudwick (professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego) will give the lecture “From Natural History to the History of Nature” hosted by the Vossius Center (UvA) and the Stevin Centre (VU).

This one-day conference, organized by the VU Stevin Centre in celebration of its fifth anniversary, focuses on the rationales of teaching the history of knowledge and on finding appealing ways of doing so.
